JUDGE BIOGRAPHIES

julie rs w_bord  Julie Winkel

Julie Winkel has been a longtime equestrian, growing up out west with both of her parents largely involved in numerous equestrian disciplines.  As a young rider and trainer, Winkel had a desire to gain a complete education about the hunter/jumper industry. She owes much of her knowledge and training methods to Joe Fargis, George Morris, Melanie Taylor, and her parents.  Over 25 years ago, Winkel began her career as a judge. Since the inception of her judge’s card, Winkel has judged a considerable number of renowned horse shows including Devon, the Hampton Classic, Capital Challenge, Upperville, Harrisburg, the Winter Equestrian Festival, and Maclay and Pony Finals.   Adding to her impressive resume of horse shows, Winkel has served on many equestrian boards over the years. She currently serves on the USHJA Board of Directors, is Chairman of the USEF Continuing Education Committee, and was appointed to the Committee of the USEF Licensed Officials. Winkel is also on the USEF Hunter Committee, the Trainer Certification Committee, the Equitation Committee, and the Emerging Athletes Committee.

leo rs w_bord  Leo Conroy

Leo Conroy started his career in the equestrian industry in 1974.  Conroy trained many successful ponies and junior hunters, including Mimosa and Calling Card.  In 1988, Conroy rode Peterbilt Special to a Winter Equestrian Festival Circuit Championship.  In 1993, Conroy took a sabbatical from training to serve as the AHSA Assistant Executive Director, but then returned to training in 1994 to lead such famous horses as So No Wonder, Overdressed, Guest of Honor, All That, and Winning Edge to championships at all the major horse shows.  These top horses (as well as numerous others) helped him win the Chronicle of the Horse Hunter Horse Person of the Year award in 1997.  In 2003, Conroy trained Southern Lights, ridden by wife Samantha, to championships at the WEF Circuit, Capital Challenge, Pennsylvania National Horse Show, and Metropolitan National Horse Show.  In addition to being a top trainer, Conroy is an “R” rated judge and has officiated at all the major indoor shows, the USEF Pony Finals, Devon National Horse Show, the Royal Winter Fair in Canada, and the Kerrygold Dublin International Horse Show.  He has also served on numerous AHSA committees and is a former director of the AHSA and the World Championship Hunter Rider organization.  He is the former manager of the Old Salem Charity Horse Show, and is currently the co-Manager of the 128th National Horse Show.
